Antioxidants Found in Skin Care

Let's learn why antioxidants are vital to your skincare routine.

First, let's learn what they are! Antioxidants are natural substances that help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules produced when your body uses energy, breaks down food, or when you’re exposed to toxins like smoke, sun damage, or radiation. These molecules are unstable and steal an electron from a stable molecule, which damage the cell. Free Radical damage can cause a variety of problems to your skin and can be visibly detected in several ways: wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, loss in firmness or elasticity, and more.

Antioxidants play important roles in preventing ageing and diseases linked to free radical damage. The answer we share next is pretty scientific but worthwhile to know when you're invested in maintaining and improving your skin! Antioxidants work by neutralizing the free radicals by donating an electron and stabilizing the molecule. When too many free radicals accumulate it’s called oxidative stress, which is linked to many chronic diseases and signs of ageing on the skin.

How to get more antioxidants in your day to day?

Antioxidants are most abundant in fruits and vegetables, and they can also be incorporated into your skincare! Vitamin C, Vitamin E are common examples of antioxidants and are often found in our diet.

Vitamin C can donate hydrogen atoms and stabilize free radicals. Beyond Skincare, Vitamin C has been proven to boost immunity and low levels of vitamin C are linked to poor overall health. For the skin, Vitamin C has proven to decrease inflammation, fade hyperpigmentation, prevent skin sagging and boost skin’s elasticity.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that also stabilizes free radicals. Vitamin E in general is important to your health but specifically your skin health. Vitamin E can be applied to the face directly within the products you use, which can reduce inflammation, acne scars, and prevent wrinkles and other signs of ageing.
